Stark County Emergency Management requested and received commission approval to buy two Motorola APX 8000 dual-band portable radios to support mutual-aid communications.
Brad, the county’s emergency management representative, told commissioners the radios will operate on VHF (to communicate with some neighboring counties and local road crews) and on the 800 MHz “siren” system the county is adopting. He explained some neighboring jurisdictions are not switching to siren and that the dual-band capability will preserve interoperability during mutual-aid responses.
Brad requested two portable APX 8000 units at a total cost of $13,836.22 and recommended purchasing through the county vendor ECI in Bismarck. Commissioners discussed vendor choice, price trends and prior reimbursement opportunities tied to state purchases; staff said a March state reimbursement window that would have reduced cost had closed prior to the request. Commissioners voted to approve purchase and authorized the funding be taken from the general fund.
Brad said the radios are hand-held portables and that they will be issued for mutual-aid incidents and to field personnel where needed.
The approval authorizes procurement and directs Emergency Management to provide delivery timing and follow-up to the commission.
