Dunn County lifts total burn ban, returns to daily fire-index restrictions with caveats

Dunn County commissioners voted to lift the countywide total burn ban and revert to the daily fire-index restrictions used to determine whether small fires (for example campfires or burn barrels) are allowed on any given day, with one notable caveat: no large controlled burns or burn pits will be permitted at this time.

Ryan, representing local fire officials and the regional Western Restrictions Group, briefed the board on regional conditions and mutual-aid pressures. He said several neighboring counties had already adjusted restrictions and recommended returning to the fire-index system that sets allowable burning by daily risk ratings. He cautioned that large pits and controlled burns will remain prohibited because those fires can re‑ignite during windy, dry conditions; the board agreed.

As part of the discussion, the board was reminded of potential penalties for illegal burning. Meeting participants noted a maximum penalty referenced in public discussion — “a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and a $1,500 fine” — and county staff said people who ignite fires are responsible for damage caused by those fires.

Motion and vote: Commissioner Pelton moved to remove the total burn ban and return to burning rules keyed to the daily fire index, with the exception of large pits and large controlled burns; Commissioner Olsen seconded. The motion carried by voice vote. County staff said they will post updated guidance on county websites and coordinate with fire chiefs.
