Board approves $471,532 roof replacement for Hughes Elementary, funded from sinking fund

The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education on May 6 approved $471,532.35 for a roof replacement at Hughes Elementary.
District staff told the board the middle two-thirds of the West Education Wing require replacement; those roof sections are original to the building's construction in the mid-1960s. "Upon completion, sections will be covered under a comprehensive 20 year warranty," a staff member said. The staff member recommended awarding the contract to Modern Roofing for labor and materials, to be procured via the Omni cooperative purchasing arrangement with Tremco.
Board members noted Modern Roofing was not the lowest bidder but had a faster completion schedule; one participant described the price difference as "a couple thousand dollars." The staff member said the funds will come from the district sinking fund. Trustee Matt Davis moved approval; Vice President Shauna Gamble seconded the motion. The board approved the measure by voice vote.
During discussion board members and staff briefly compared Hughes to other buildings; Walters (another district facility) was noted to still have an original roof and staff estimated a typical metal roof lifespan at 30 to 50 years but said they would check specifics. No public comment was offered on the item at the meeting. The board did not set a construction start date in the presentation.
