Ravalli County, City of Hamilton to split $4,200 cost to remove three aging courthouse trees

The Ravalli County Board of County Commissioners voted April 21 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the City of Hamilton to remove three aging trees near the county courthouse and related site work.
County staff reported one of the trees has a split branch and presents a risk of falling during a strong windstorm. “One branch is already split and that’s the one I’m worried about coming down on top of cars,” Jesse, county staff, said during the discussion.
Contractor Scott provided a price of $1,400 per tree, which the county said included stump removal; the total contract price is $4,200. Commissioners approved a split cost arrangement of $2,100 from the county and $2,100 from the city. The mayor of Hamilton had provided a signed MOU, county staff said.
Commissioners moved and seconded the memorandum of understanding and approved the contract by voice vote. Commissioner Chilcott was excused at roll call; the motion carried with the commissioners present voting aye.
County staff said the city may have access to a replanting grant for up to 60 replacement trees that would be planted across the city; staff will follow up with Hamilton to confirm grant eligibility and plantings.
