The Southgate Community School District Board of Education approved purchase of a Glowforge laser cutter/engraver May 13 to expand the graphics design curriculum. The board approved the purchase following staff presentation that said funding will be fully reimbursed by DCTC.
Staff presented two Glowforge quotes: $6,294 direct from Glowforge and $6,000 from Bloom; staff recommended purchasing through Bloom for $6,000. The purchase includes an air‑filtration system to capture byproducts from engraving, and Bloom offers ongoing service for the life of the product, the presenter said.
Presenters described the machine as industry standard for graphics work and noted it expands student capabilities to engrave wood, glass and metal and to cut with high precision. Staff said there is no existing comparable equipment in the program and that the district will repurpose retired machinery to make room for the new device. The board moved and approved the purchase; no additional conditions were recorded.
