Board discusses renaming Dudley site; staff recommend 'Dudley Early Learning Center' or 'Bearkat Early Learning Center'

At the May 12 work session, Battle Creek Public Schools staff presented the naming committee’s recommendation for the district’s planned transition of the Dudley site into an early learning center.
Doctor Carter (district staff) said the naming committee and Dudley staff had narrowed recommendations to two options: Dudley Early Learning Center or Bearkat Early Learning Center. Carter told the board that the staff and community survey showed roughly 58 percent support for Dudley Early Learning Center and about 41 percent for Bearkat Early Learning Center.
Trustees asked whether the district had researched the origin of the Dudley name. Carter said the building was named for a former teacher who lived in the community and that staff did not find records indicating the namesake was associated with wrongdoing. The naming discussion at the work session was for feedback; the board will consider adopting a name at a future meeting after additional review.
