Board approves Clemson literacy partnership, middle-school STEM summer program and several local courses; adopts staff/student medication policies

The Chesterfield County School District board approved several curriculum and program items and adopted policies intended to support student health and instruction.
Curriculum and professional development: The district is participating with Clemson University under a grant to provide teachers an opportunity to earn a master27s in literacy instruction with emphasis on multilingual learners at no cost to the teacher. The presenter said five Chesterfield teachers were accepted into the master27s program; teachers will receive ESOL certification and literacy-teacher certification along with the degree. Caregivers may also complete learning modules to support their children and will receive a stipend for completing modules.
Summer program and courses: The board approved a middle-school summer program, "Explore, Experiment and Excel," for New Heights Middle School and Long Middle School. The program will run June 226ndash;26, Monday26ndash;Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon, provide breakfast and lunch, and offer transportation. The program uses a STEM approach, includes high-impact tutoring led by certified teachers and an introduction to cybersecurity; the district is working with Varsity Tutors to run the program.
Local course approvals: The board gave local approval for six courses to be offered next year: Machine Tool Technology 1, 2 and 3 at Scharral High School, Firefighter 1 and 2 at Central High School, and Agricultural Power Mechanics at MacBee High School. The presenter indicated these are locally approved now and will be coded in the state27s new system later.
Policies and federal program authorization: Doctor King presented three policies for second reading and approval: JLCDA (individual health-care plans), JLCDB (use of life-saving medications) and JLCD (assisting students with medications); the board approved those policies on second reading. The board also approved for first reading a revised policy ADF (school wellness), which clarifies allowable fundraiser exemptions under Smart Snacks guidance and names Director of Food Services Reba Powers as the district27s designated wellness officer.
The board also authorized Dr. Hoffman as the district27s federal programs director for Title I, II, III, IV and V for the 202526ndash;26 year; that action was approved and recorded in the minutes.
What this means: The Clemson grant expands the district27s capacity to support multilingual learners by training reading leaders at no cost to participating teachers. The summer program aims to strengthen middle-school math skills and introduce cybersecurity, while local career-technical courses expand hands-on options at three high schools.
