Board approves $1.7 million from capital reserves for baseball and softball design

The Horry County Board approved a motion to use $1.7 million of capital improvement residual funds to pay design fees for five phases of baseball and softball facility projects.

At the request of facilities staff, Mr. Birch told the board the intent is to separate the athletic design fees from the annual allocation so the district can undertake a more robust, inclusive design effort. "We are recommending that we go forth and do that, utilizing some of our capital improvement residual funds. The total cost for the design fees for all 5 phases is roughly $1,700,000," Mr. Birch said.

Birch moved approval of the use of the funds; a board member seconded the motion and the board instructed staff to proceed. During discussion a board member asked whether the appropriation covered all athletic projects or only the baseball and softball fields; the chair clarified it applied to the baseball and softball design work only.

The motion passed on a recorded vote; board members were asked to cast votes using the electronic machines. The approved funds will be drawn from three separate capital improvement residual accounts identified by staff.
