Detroit — The Detroit Public Schools Community District board chair publicly apologized on May 13 to Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School principal Perry after an Inspector General report was shared with the media, saying a district preliminary review showed no illegal activity or malfeasance by the principal and that the leak violated district operating procedures.
“[T]he District's preliminary review did not reveal any malefiance or illegal activity by this principle,” the chair said during the public meeting, adding that “it is unfortunate that someone shared the Inspector General's report to the media. This is against our operating procedures and a contradiction to our core values and was not fair to the principal or to the school community.”
The chair said she had asked for an IT review “to be conducted to determine who may have leaked the report to the media and that that person, should they be revealed, would indeed face some disciplinary actions and or censor.” She apologized directly to Principal Perry and said the board “would like to apologize for that breach taking place” and will “restore him in every way possible.”
Board members did not take a public vote on investigative or disciplinary options in open session; the chair said the matter would proceed through administrative and personnel processes and that a forensic IT review was underway to identify the source of the disclosure.
The board also directed staff to follow the naming/renaming policy process after a public request about preserving the name of the soon‑to‑close Blackwell Institute; a board member volunteered to champion a renaming proposal and staff were assigned to assist with next steps.
