Council members delivered committee reports on Jan. 27 covering environmental programs, recreation, the health department and upcoming community events.
Councilwoman Zink reported that the Green Team has collected 228 pounds of clean plastic film toward a 1,000-pound goal; the borough will receive a bench when the goal is reached by or before Oct. 31, 2025. Collection bins are located at the New Milford Senior Center, the New Milford Library and Borough Hall; a new weatherproof bin was added to the DPW. The Green Team is pursuing additional programming, outreach and a Sustainable Jersey certification upgrade from bronze toward silver, and is participating in a Bergen Public Utilities community energy planning grant that includes municipal fleet efficiency evaluation and stakeholder meetings.
Other committee reports included recreation updates (reorganization and winter seasons underway, a new basketball clinic for kindergarten-first grade), planning-board reorganization and an early discussion of affordable housing, and public events scheduling such as Crescent Moon Lighting on Feb. 27 and a free rabies clinic on Feb. 8 (10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DPW) for Bergen County residents; only New Milford residents could register their pets in New Milford that day, per the meeting.
The board of health presented communicable-disease data for February 2024 in its annual report to the borough: the recorded counts in the transcript were COVID: 573; influenza: 131; Lyme disease: 14; blood-borne illness: 12; Hepatitis B: 2. The health officer27s report also noted the rabies clinic scheduled for Feb. 8.
Council members encouraged resident participation in upcoming events, and several volunteers and community groups were thanked for rapid support of a Williams Field lighting grant application. No formal council action was taken during the committee reports portion of the meeting; the items were informational.
