Hawthorne reports $255,000 pump-station damage, orders emergency work; service-line replacement underway

Borough staff reported that a water supply pipe and closed valve at the Gothel Road pump station ruptured, flooding the station and damaging electrical systems. The administration estimated total repair costs of about $255,000 and said much of the cost is expected to be covered by insurance.
One component of the repair is estimated to cost about $48,000 and has a manufacturer lead time of up to 12 weeks because it must be custom made. Because the pump station must be operable to maintain Peachtree and Fairview tanks during summer demand, the administration said it will issue a purchase order immediately and present an emergency‑purchasing resolution at the next council meeting.
Separately, Town Engineer Joe Byrne reported that the galvanized water service line replacement Phase 3 is underway. The contractor has completed approximately half of 200 services on Third Avenue. A county road opening permit for Diamond Bridge Avenue has been received but the county’s start date is weather dependent; March 15 was identified as a hard start date if weather permits. Council members raised concerns about access to properties with unsafe conditions (a house described as a hoarding condition) and staff said the borough will coordinate with police, inspectors and the contractor to develop a plan for any parcels that present safety risks.
The engineer also reported progress on local recreation‑facility projects (bleacher and AV work at Franklin Field and Wagro Field) and that design documents for the 2024–25 road program are being revised in response to NJ MOVES iBank comments.
