Warren County supervisors on April 21 approved several requests from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, including moving a small encumbered grant balance into the current fiscal year, awarding a roof-repair contract for the correctional facility kitchen, and creating a contingent patrol officer position. The committee also authorized staff to pursue state-level approval to acquire a state-owned stockpiled property in Queensbury that the sheriff’s office said would be useful for training and storage.
The board approved a budget amendment to move $2,592 remaining from a prior fiscal-year grant (identified at the meeting as the Edward Byrne Memorial grant balance) forward into fiscal year 2024–25 so the Sheriff’s Office can access the encumbered funds. Supervisors passed the motion by voice vote.
The sheriff’s office also presented a contract for roof repairs to the correctional facility kitchen from Tekta America Weather Guard. The sheriff said Tekta America was one of two bidders judged suitable and that the work will cost "just over $22,000." Supervisors approved proceeding with the repairs.
The committee approved creating a second contingent patrol officer position on the department’s table of organization. The sheriff’s office said the post requires no new funding and is intended to allow contingent hires ahead of a police academy starting in July; contingent hires would be vacated if retirements do not occur as anticipated.
Separately, the sheriff described a state-owned ‘‘stockpile’’ property in Queensbury on Fox Farm Road that the department wants to use for training, storage and communications. The committee approved a resolution authorizing the county to pursue a home-rule request that would allow the county to take ownership, with the sheriff’s office noting the transfer would require state legislative action (the office expects to present the request in the 2026 legislative session). The county attorney said the county deeded much of the land to the state in the 1960s and that the current action would seek to return it to county use; no immediate county expense other than maintenance is anticipated.
Two agenda items seeking budget increases tied to the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance Bulletproof Vest Partnership reimbursement — listed at the meeting as amounts of $10,981.27 and $15,473.57 — were withdrawn from the agenda by the sheriff at the meeting after staff clarified those reimbursements are paid differently than some other grants and would not require the budget amendment the office had filed.
