Council cancels May election after certification of unopposed candidates

Tammy Heller, the city secretary, told the council that candidates for Place 1, Place 3 and Place 5 were unopposed; under state law the city must cancel the election and certify the unopposed candidates.
The council adopted Ordinance 2025-07 canceling the May general election, and staff said they will send required notices to the Hays County elections administrator, post notifications at polling locations and proceed with the required canvass. Heller said the canvass and oath-of-office meeting is scheduled for May 13 at 5:30 p.m., when the newly elected council members' terms will start.
Council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance and cancel the election; several council members discussed process and confirmed they would not recuse themselves from the ministerial vote to cancel the election, as a failure to act would leave the city without a quorum for other actions.
