Council okays SUP amendment for TYC Dance to expand into additional suite at 6700 Main Street

The Colony City Council voted to approve an amendment to an existing specific-use permit that will allow TYC Dance, at 6700 Main Street (Suites 131, 132), to expand operations into Suite 149 and increase the facility’s overall square footage from approximately 4,176 to about 6,116 square feet.
Planning staff said the original SUP for a dance studio at this shopping-center location was granted in 2001 and the business expanded in summer 2023 to add additional suites. The current request is a further expansion for more studio space, storage and restrooms. Staff told the council the applicant provided the required SUP criteria responses and that the Planning Commission recommended approval by a 5–0 vote. The Development Review Committee also recommended approval.
A representative for TYC Dance told council the older dancers require larger studios. She said the two original small studios are about 550 square feet each, a subsequent suite is about 1,000 square feet, and the proposed Suite 149 will accommodate the teen-age and larger classes that cannot fit comfortably in the smaller rooms. The applicant said students would be supervised when moving between suites.
Councilmember Swaddler moved approval; Councilmember Wade seconded and the ordinance amendment passed on the council vote.
