City staff outlines transportation projects to seek federal and state funding

City transportation staff presented a slate of pedestrian, bicycle and roadway projects that the city plans to submit for federal and state grant funding through the Alamo Area MPO, TxDOT and FHWA programs.
Gary Ford, director of transportation and capital improvements and city engineer, described project selection criteria (project readiness, competitiveness, and connectivity) and proposed grouped submissions to improve the city's chances in competitive calls. Priority projects include sidewalk infill on Plum/Peach/Grape Avenues, a shared-use path and sidewalk connections on Hans Drive, a sidewalk on Avery Parkway near schools, the San Antonio Spur complete-street project between Walnut Avenue and I-35, the Water Lane/Waterway Lane multi-use trail connection, the Barbara Rosa (funded but with a funding gap), the Seguin–Landa–Zinc roundabout and pedestrian improvements downtown, Fairlane realignment (high-crash location), school-zone flashers and a recurring traffic-signal optimization effort.
Staff emphasized that many projects were ready at different design stages and that readiness and demonstrated local match are important to secure awards. Ford said the Water Lane project would form a key multimodal corridor linking neighborhoods to Green and downtown and highlighted coordination with the Great Springs Project and other regional partners.
Staff will finalize costs and return with resolutions supporting grant applications when submissions are formally made.
