Keep Allen Beautiful reports volunteers, spring cleanup and recycling day to council

Keep Allen Beautiful (CAB) told the council it recruited more than 1,000 volunteers who removed over 2,500 pounds of litter from 55 miles of roadway; the group also announced the Great American Cleanup event on April 26 at the Municipal Service Center.
Joe Spash, chair of Keep Allen Beautiful (CAB), gave the council an annual report describing volunteer litter cleanups, educational outreach, citywide recycling events and scholarships funded through the program.
Spash said CAB is a 501(c)(3) with seven council-appointed members that works with the city's Solid Waste Division to recruit volunteers and run cleanup and recycling events. He reported that last year CAB engaged more than 1,000 volunteers who removed over 2,500 pounds of litter from about 55 miles of roadways, waterways and other sites. CAB also runs Allen Recycles Day (in November) and the Great American Cleanup; the Great American Cleanup is scheduled April 26 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Municipal Service Center, 900 S. Greenville Ave., with entry to the event from the southbound Greenville approach.
Spash said CAB worked with partners including schools, scout groups, nonprofits, religious organizations and businesses, and noted the group also awards two $1,000 scholarships annually to Allen ISD students through the Foundation for Allen Schools. He thanked the Allen Police Department for allowing use of space at the service center for the recycling events and noted CAB's statewide and national recognition for beautification and education efforts.
Councilmembers thanked CAB for its volunteer work and outreach. Spash encouraged residents to visit the city website for event details and volunteer opportunities.
