Allen council approves $1.96 million contract to renovate Don Rodenbaugh Aquatic Center pump room and pools

The Allen City Council on April 20 approved a $1,961,446 contract with Sunbelt Pools Inc. to renovate the pump room, update filtration and electrical systems, resurface pool plaster and repair a leak at the Don Rodenbaugh Aquatic Center.
Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Kyle Benedict told council the pool’s mechanical equipment is largely original to the 2001 facility and “the existing infrastructure in that room is oxidized greatly.” He said the project adds a newer autonomous filtration unit — described in the meeting as a “defender” — that will reduce daily backwashing and related water loss and operational disruptions. “It is a fully autonomous filtration system,” Benedict said during his presentation.
Benedict said the bid package brought multiple competitive proposals and that the city could add the competition pool replaster and a discovered lateral line leak repair within the same budget after additional engineering and excavation identified the leak’s start and stop points. He said construction is scheduled to begin in June, timed to minimize disruption for the high school swim season, and that Ford Pool (an outdoor facility) will remain available during the work.
Council members asked about the timing and access for members during construction. Benedict and Parks and Recreation Director Kate Meacham told council that memberships would be credited during the closure: “all memberships will be not charged during this time,” Meacham said, and that members would have access to Ford Pool and other accommodations while the indoor facility is closed for work.
Councilman Tommy Berry moved approval of the Sunbelt Pools contract; Councilman Michael Schaffer seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.
The contract was described in the meeting as covering pump-room renovations, electrical work, pool resurfacing and leak repair; the agenda packet and staff presentation list the scope in more detail. Benedict told the council the project team expects a short period of noisy demolition — including a week of intensive plaster removal — and that the project timeline is aligned with school and UIL schedules so the indoor pool will be available for the swim season if work proceeds on schedule.
