Carrollton Fire Chief outlines staffing, fleet upgrades and new EMS strategies

Chief Michael Thompson, Carrollton Fire Rescue: "We ran a total of 15,779 calls for service last year," he told the City Council during a Feb. 4 work session. "Of that, 10,235 were EMS calls, which was a 3% increase over 2023." Thompson said the department completed nearly 9,000 hours of EMS continuing education and almost 65,000 hours of fire training in 2024.
The department has focused on replacing aging apparatus and changing deployment. Thompson said four new ambulances have been placed in service, two more are on order, and a new tiller truck and four new engines will come into service over the next few weeks. He said the average age of the heavy fleet dropped from about 10 years to 3 years after recent replacements.
