Town reports progress on communications projects; cell tower work slated for summer

Town staff updated the Select Board March 5 on multiple municipal communications projects affecting public-safety infrastructure.
Staff reported that Industrial Communications has installed the network rack and battery system inside the Reservoir Street shelter and that MPD2 was moved offline while installers completed final rack work. Mansfield Electric completed fiber runs to a pole on Reservoir Street and Phoenix Communications completed splicing back to 500 E Street; a trench damaged during the run will be repaired at an estimated $3,000'$4,000, staff said, and the cost was within the current project budget.
Separately, the board was told that Tarpon Towers was the successful bidder for a new cell tower project across from 500 E Street (the public-safety complex). Planning, zoning and conservation board hearings have been completed and approved; staff said construction is expected in the summer. The town's public buildings manager, Mike Ahern, said the carrier will install the town's antennas and fiber at no contractor installation cost to the town, but the town will need to supply materials and funding for public-safety antennas and for relocating a radio repeater from the high school to the new tower.
Town staff characterized the projects as advancing the town's public-safety communications capabilities and said the additional trench repair cost is within the project budget. The Select Board did not take separate votes on funding during the meeting but was informed that funding requests for antennas and the repeater relocation will follow.
