North Ridgeville superintendent presents draft 2025–26 school calendar; two overnight field trips scheduled for second reading

North Ridgeville City Board of Education Superintendent David Drake on Tuesday presented a draft 2025–26 school calendar and outlined two proposed supervised overnight student trips, both of which were entered as first readings and scheduled for a second reading and possible approval at the board’s Feb. 18 meeting.
Drake said the draft calendar “very closely mirrors what we have in place for this school year” and described start dates, professional-development days and holiday breaks that he said would keep the district’s total student days consistent with the current year. He also described the rationale for professional-development spacing, saying those days are needed to meet recent legal requirements and training initiatives.
The draft calendar’s notable dates as presented by Drake include staff beginning on Aug. 18, three professional development days early in the year, students scheduled to arrive in August (as presented), a records day on Oct. 24 and a professional development day on Oct. 27, an Election Day closure, a two-week winter break running through early January, a records day on Jan. 9, Presidents’ Day and a spring break beginning March 30 with a student last day around May 21 and staff last day around May 22. Drake noted pre-kindergarten and kindergarten would start the week after the main student start to allow time for assessments and placements. The superintendent said the seniors’ last in-person day would be May 15 with commencement planned between May 19 and May 21. Board members asked clarifying questions about several calendar entries during the presentation.
Also under the education report, the board received two supervised overnight field-trip proposals: the North Ridgeville High School (NRHS) choir to travel to Chicago, Illinois, to attend a collegiate chorale clinic at VanderCook College of Music and perform at the Field Museum of Natural History from April 24–26, 2026; and the NRHS cheer team to attend a UCA cheer camp at Great Wolf Lodge from July 7–10, 2025. The board discussion confirmed that the choir trip dates were corrected on the agenda to 2026 and that organizers are starting fundraising now.
All education items presented Tuesday were introduced as first readings. The board’s second reading and vote on the calendar and the two field trips is scheduled for the district’s Feb. 18 regular meeting.
The presentation and discussion occurred during the education report portion of the board meeting and did not include formal board approval on Feb. 4. The superintendent and board members said staff will continue to refine calendar details and communicate with families; Drake asked board members to forward any questions and said staff would provide updated materials before the Feb. 18 vote.
