The study, conducted by the Summit Education Initiative and presented by an SEI researcher, examined attendance, graduation and GPA outcomes alongside achievement predictors including credits earned in ninth grade, course grades in Algebra I and ELA, and demographic factors. The presenter said, “earning 5 or more credits in ninth grade was the most powerful predictor in all of these models.”
Why it matters: the board heard that ninth‑grade course accumulation and performance in ELA 10 and Algebra I are possible intervention points that could improve graduation‑related outcomes. The presenter recommended combining multiple years of cohorts to increase sample size and statistical power before changing large‑scale policy.
Key findings - About 80% of students earned five or more credits in ninth grade; students who did so had higher twelfth‑grade GPAs and attendance rates in the study cohort.
