The district’s athletics director, Tasty Commander, presented fall 2024 season results to the Bedford Board of Education, highlighting improved team records, league honors and academic performance among student‑athletes.
Commander said the girls soccer program improved to 7‑8‑1 with a league title, naming Anna Mingo Ferrum as league player of the year. Boys soccer went 11‑3‑4, and coach Nick Schaefer was named coach of the year, Commander said. Lady Bearcats volleyball moved up to third in the league under new coach Sydney Adamson. The football team posted a 5‑4 record and produced several all‑conference players.
Commander emphasized academics alongside athletics: he said 92 fall athletes met the district’s “preseason academic All‑American” standard (3.0 GPA or better) and that post‑season figures rose so that 71% of fall athletes held a 3.0 GPA or higher at season’s end. Middle school coaches also reported successes: Heskett Middle School programs won conference titles in football and volleyball and hosted a second annual cross‑country meet, presenters said.
Board members praised coaches and students for balancing competition and classroom work. Commander and middle‑school staff said they plan to strengthen feeder relationships with local recreation programs, run summer offerings, and expand community partnerships that support athletics and academic development.
