Highlights included Michael Britton (recommended as a high-school counselor), Chelsea Neely (administrative assistant to the executive director of operations) and Deshaun Washington, who was approved both as a social studies teacher at the high school and as the varsity football coach.
Washington addressed the board after his appointment and said his priorities will be academic success and character development: “I would like to thank you for the opportunity and the trust you have placed in me to lead your young men. I know everybody here wants to win football games as much as I do. But the most important win is these kids winning in life,” he said. He added that every senior who has played for him previously graduated, and he emphasized classroom performance: “I'll work even harder in the classroom than I will on the field.”
Board members welcomed the hires and noted the value of alumni returning to serve in district roles. The personnel approvals were included in the consent agenda and passed by roll call 5–0.
