Fremont City Schools awarded OFCC safety grant to replace middle-school PA system

Fremont City Schools has been awarded an Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) K–12 School Safety grant that the district plans to use to replace the middle school public-address system, the superintendent told the board Monday.
The superintendent said, “Monies need to be liquidated by March 31, 2025.” The district added the grant can only be spent on facilities that are five years old or older, which in the district limits the eligible work to the middle school building.
The superintendent said the middle-school PA system is original to the building and about 13 years old. “This PA system allows for an intercommunication within the entire building, as well as ... the exterior portion of the building,” the superintendent said, describing how the system connects classrooms, hallways and the outside of the building and why it meets the grant’s safety criteria.
Board members did not take a separate vote on a grant acceptance during the meeting; the item was presented as part of the superintendent’s report to inform the board and community. The superintendent named staff members who helped secure the award, saying the nomination and application work was led by “Mister Anway and Miss Parkhurst.”
The superintendent and staff did not give a dollar amount for the award during the report; staff said the grant has a short liquidation cycle and emphasized the March 31 deadline. The district said the funds will be used to update the PA hardware and intercom functionality at the middle school so announcements and emergency communications reach both interior and exterior building areas.
The superintendent presented the grant during the regular meeting’s reports; no additional approvals or budget transfers tied to this grant were recorded in the meeting minutes.
