Board reviews K–5 ELA curriculum, approves calendar, donations, early graduations and personnel items

The Fremont City School Board received updates on curriculum review and approved several operational items in the superintendent’s report, including a K–5 English language arts review and a course-length adjustment for an engineering class.
Curriculum: Superintendent Denise reported the district is completing a review of K–5 ELA curriculum with a deadline for committee recommendations later in the month. The curriculum-quality committee also approved changing the Intro to Engineering and Design course from a full-year to a semester offering; the course is supported with career-technical funds and aligns to a graduation seal.
Calendar: The board approved the 2025–26 district calendar (option A), the calendar selected by the teachers’ bargaining unit, after a motion aligned with the staff recommendation. A board member asked whether scheduled teacher workdays near holidays are expected to be worked; administration confirmed calendared workdays are required workdays.
Donations and early graduations: The board approved a package of community donations to district programs and accepted requests to grant Ross High School diplomas to 11 students who completed graduation requirements a semester early. The superintendent noted that donations are in addition to existing budgets and sometimes come with donor-specified uses.
Personnel: The board approved grouped personnel items including resignations, three-hour cook appointment, support staff hires, student teachers (Bowling Green State University and Heidelberg University placements), supplemental contracts and coaching assignments. One board member recorded a “no” on the grouped personnel block; the motions nevertheless passed by roll call.
Mentoring and recognition: The board adopted resolutions recognizing School Board Recognition Month and National Mentoring Month. The superintendent noted 49 community mentors at Fremont Middle School and 36 at Ross High School and provided contact information for community members interested in volunteering.
Why it matters: Curriculum decisions and calendar adoption affect instruction, staffing and the school year structure. Early diplomas and supplemental contracts affect students’ postsecondary timing and staffing capacity. Mentoring supports provide direct community resources for students.
