Miami County accepts $375,000 COPS grant to add two patrol deputies

The Miami County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on May 14 to accept a $375,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program to support three deputy positions over three years.
Sheriff's Office leadership told the commission the county already used part of the grant to fund a school resource officer at Queen of the Holy Rosary and asked permission to add two additional deputies, with start dates in August and October.
“That grant allocated $375,000 to Miami County to hire 3 deputies for patrol. That $375,000 is to be allocated over a 3 year period,” said Undersheriff Matt Kelly, explaining the award and timeline. He said the county had budgeted for one position through contractual funding from the school and that adding the two deputies would not require county funds in 2025; financing for 2026 will be addressed in the 2026 budget process.
Commissioner Vickery moved to approve acceptance of the grant; Commissioner Vaughn seconded. The motion passed by unanimous voice vote.
The county will add the two positions later this year and work with county finance staff to address any ongoing funding needs in the next budget cycle.
