Commissioners discuss paving schedule, mill-and-overlay work and minimum-maintenance road designations; action deferred

Public works and the board discussed current roadwork, milling and overlay schedules and a set of county roads proposed for minimum-maintenance designation during the May 12 meeting.
Public Works Director reported ongoing paving and milling projects: overlay work on Old 81 north of town, milling on Arrowhead west of Moundridge, and milling and seating work in several other locations including Maxwell and a bridge project on 181130 east of McPherson. "Next, we'll go to Arrowhead West Of Moundridge ... then bring back in Industrial to do more milling on Arrowhead, East of Inman," the director said. He warned commissioners that drivers may call about work on 27th North between Canton and Roxbury.
Separately, commissioners considered multiple road segments proposed for formal minimum-maintenance status. Staff said townships had initiated the requests and that township boards on border roads were in agreement. A county staff member summarized state guidance: "According to the state, regulation or statute ... no such permanentity or employee thereof shall be liable for damages arriving from such roads or their maintenance or condition," which staff said addresses liability for minimum-maintenance roads. Commissioners were advised that a formal resolution would be required and could be scheduled for the June 1 (or June 2) meeting; the board took no action on the designations at the May 12 meeting.
Staff also raised a pending Safe Roads grant that requires the chairman's signature and discussed routine scheduling and paving follow-ups; commissioners agreed to sign paperwork when the contract documents arrive.
