Board approves purchase of tree-grapple attachment for county loader

Dave (public works director) told commissioners he solicited multiple quotes for a grapple to use at the county tree pit and during right-of-way brush operations. The vendor Prairie Land quoted $26,000 for a GrabTech unit, and Double L Manufacturing (Clay Center) offered a lower-price fabricated unit; the board approved the Double L Manufacturing quote.
"They can actually, fabricate it the same as the grama tech grapple for significantly lower price," a public works representative said. The county motioned to approve the quote from Double L Manufacturing for roughly $17,009.86 for the build. Staff said the unit will be about 8 feet wide with one-inch-thick steel on the tines and three-quarter-inch on support parts, and that manufacturing lead time would likely be one to two months.
Commissioners approved the purchase by voice vote and directed staff to complete procurement and scheduling. Staff said the grapple will be used primarily for stacking trees at the tree pit and for loading trucks during right-of-way operations.
