Commission approves juvenile collaboration grant application to expand truancy work and add intake supervisor

Sunny Millison, director of Harvey McPherson County’s Community Corrections, asked the commission for permission to apply for a juvenile collaboration grant that would continue a joint truancy program and fund a full-time juvenile intake supervisor.
“It’s juvenile collaboration...there’s two parts to it. One is to continue the truancy program that OBM out of Harvey County has been doing with both counties. And then the second part is to hire a full time juvenile intake supervisor,” Millison said.
Millison said the supervisor position is a two-year position contingent on grant funding and that the grant’s award would not go into effect until July 1; she estimated a decision from the funder would come in a couple of months.
A commissioner moved to approve signing and submitting the juvenile collaboration grant application; commissioners seconded the motion and voted in favor. The motion authorized staff to submit the application but did not appropriate local matching funds at the meeting.
Millison said if the grant is awarded the county would proceed with hiring once funding was secured. Questions from commissioners focused on timing and whether the application covered two separate applications under a single submission; Millison and staff confirmed the request encompassed both parts under one application process.
The commission’s approval authorized the clerk or designated official to sign grant documents and submit the application for the juvenile collaboration grant.
