Pepper Pike staff told the council May 12 that the city applied for a small Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative grant—funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative—to pilot and compare methods for controlling phragmites in a city retention basin.
The collaborative’s small grants support local trials that collect data on cost and effectiveness of treatments to control the invasive reed phragmites. Staff said the project would target a retention basin where phragmites has been accumulating organic matter and reducing basin volume, which can affect stormwater performance. The city submitted the application last month; staff expect to hear from the collaborative and will return with next steps if the grant is awarded.
Don and other staff said the grant amount is modest, and the project would combine city operations and grant funds; final scope and any required appropriations would be brought to council if the award is received.
