Council approves paving contracts; Gates schools paving to finish in about a month, staff says

Pepper Pike City Council on May 12 approved a set of street-paving contracts, accepting a low bidder and discussing optional alternate bid items for different street segments. Council voted to adopt the recommended contract; roll call indicated unanimous approval for the item.
Staff reviewed bid prices and an alternate-bid comparison showing one alternate came in slightly lower than the other when combined with base items. Council members asked whether faster completion (shorter contract days) was worth a higher bid; staff said the city had enough schedule cushion and did not expect a winter-weather deadline problem.
The council also asked about the Gates Schools paving schedule. Don (public-works staff) said the contractor has placed the intermediate asphalt course; crews are completing concrete, curb and catch-basin work over the next three to four weeks, and the final asphalt layer should be applied in about a month. Traffic will be maintained during milling and paving operations though there will be temporary interruptions at active work areas.
