Kettering planning staff reports strong turnout at comprehensive-plan open house; several demolition projects moving forward

City Planner Ryan Holmesy told the Kettering Planning Commission on May 5 that a recent public open house for the city's comprehensive plan drew higher-than-expected attendance and active resident participation.
"The week before last we had the public open house for the comprehensive plan," Holmesy said. "It was very well attended. We got a lot of very good comments and very active residents who showed up." Holmesy said staff will review input with the consultant and provide an update to the commission at an upcoming steering committee meeting.
Holmesy also reported several redevelopment actions along Wilmington Pike: demolition work is under way at the former Pappeto's building; the former Kawasaki building is slated for demolition after the city acquires the property or completes acquisition steps; and the former Burger King site east of the Wilmington/Dorothy intersection is under construction for a similar restaurant use. "Those are some of the more visible sites that are under construction now," he said.
Finally, Holmesy said the planning department has received a conditional-use application for a proposed development at Research Park; he said the upcoming staff report for that item will be substantial.
Commissioners present praised staff for public engagement work on the comprehensive-plan process and for cross-department coordination on visible redevelopment projects. No formal action was taken on these informational items.
