Danbury High senior captains describe mentor program, community service and student supports

A group of senior student leaders from Danbury High School told the board about the Class Act Council's mentoring, community-service, and leadership activities aimed at supporting athletes academically and emotionally.
Alexis Johnson, introduced as president of the Danbury High School Class Act Council, described the program as a cohort of 20 senior captains who lead athletic teams and run a student-led effort to build community, support teachers and officials, and mentor younger or at-risk athletes. "We have a quick little presentation. So Class Act is a select group of 20 DHS senior captains, and we come together to represent our athletic department," Johnson said.
Students outlined activities including mentor pairings (each captain selects a mentee), community-service events (Read Across America, Clean Danbury Day), official-appreciation weeks for fall/winter/spring and outreach to middle schools to promote sports participation. The students said the mentoring work addresses academic struggles and mental-health pressures that many peers face; one student recounted a mentee story describing how joining a team provided belonging and academic improvement.
The council also highlighted awards and recognition the athletics program has received, leadership-conference participation, a scholarship and sportsmanship award, and plans to meet with the mayor to discuss school issues. Board members thanked the students for their presentations and encouraged them to stay involved with district programs.
