Board approves Goodheart-Wilcox Health for secondary schools; training to begin in August

The Highline School Board on May 7 approved the adoption of Goodheart-Wilcox Health as the district’s new core secondary health curriculum for grades 6 through 12. The motion recorded in the meeting named the amount as $312,000 and included six years of online access and initial implementation support and training. The motion passed unanimously, recorded as "5 to none."

Board members asked about implementation and language availability. A board member asked whether implementation training that begins in August would continue beyond that month; district curriculum staff replied that training will start in August and continue with job-alike sessions and early-release professional learning opportunities throughout the school year.

A director asked whether the program supports Vietnamese in addition to Spanish and English; district staff said Vietnamese was not included at this time and that the district continues to seek curricular resources that support dual-language schools.

The motion recorded in the public minutes stated: "I move that the Highline School Board approve the adoption of Good Heart Wilcox Health as the new core instructional curriculum for secondary health in grades 6 through 12 in the amount of $312,000 with the minor additions and deletions or modifications as deemed necessary by the superintendent, including 6 years of online access and the initial implementation support and training." The board’s roll call recorded all five voting members as in favor.
