Duarte city officials told the City Council that pool repairs and exercise-room renovations will temporarily close portions of the community center and delay some programming.
Emmanuel Enriquez, director of Parks and Recreation, said leaks in the competition pool forced the city to postpone a planned water-safety day. "We're in the midst of troubleshooting a number of leaks within our competition pool," he said, and staff had engaged vendors to assess repairs.
As part of an exercise-room renovation tied to a council-led initiative to emphasize health programming, the city will close the fitness center starting May 19 and plan a grand reopening on June 14 at 10 a.m. Enriquez said the scope was moved into the current fiscal year so the city could install new cardio and strength equipment and new flooring sooner than previously scheduled.
Enriquez also introduced Alicia Rico as the city’s new recreation manager. Rico, who previously worked for Whittier and other Southern California cities and holds a bachelor's degree and a juris doctor, told the council she was "really excited to be here and really honored to be a part of everybody's team." Council members welcomed her and noted her experience at other municipal recreation departments.
Enriquez reminded the public that summer day-camp registration was live on the city's site for two camp locations, Duarte Park and Royal Oaks Park, and that weekly themes and special guests had been posted. He also announced that a senior-center community yard sale postponed by rain had been rescheduled for Saturday, May 29 at 8 a.m.
Why it matters: The competition-pool leak and fitness-centre closure affect scheduled programming, safety offerings and membership access at a city-run facility. The city framed the timing as an opportunity to accelerate equipment upgrades tied to a health initiative.
What to watch: Staff will report back on the pool repair timeline and on fitness-center reopening; the city said it will notify the public when the competition pool portion can reopen earlier than planned.
