Grand Junction council certifies April election results; measure to move elections to November passes

City Clerk Celestina Sandoval presented the final certification of Grand Junction’s April 2025 municipal election results at a special City Council meeting April 21, and the council voted 5-0 to accept the report.
“So in summary, Cody Kennedy has been duly elected for District A, Laurel Cole for District D, Robert Ballard for District E, Ben Van Dyke for the at-large seat; referred measure 2A passed and 2B failed,” City Clerk Celestina Sandoval said as she summarized the certified totals.
The certified results the clerk read into the record showed Cody Kennedy winning City Council District A with 59 percent of the vote; Laurel Cole was unopposed in District D; Robert Ballard won District E with 54 percent; and Ben Van Dyke won the at-large council seat with 49 percent. Two referred measures went before voters: Measure 2A, to move city elections to November, passed with about 67 percent in favor; Measure 2B, a proposed increase in council member pay, failed. The clerk noted overall voter turnout was low but did not provide a total turnout percentage.
Ahead of the certification, Sandoval noted a city-charter requirement that any council member who is a candidate must have a judge or notary public sit in that member’s place for meetings during the campaign. For the record she named Janet Harrell and Jacob Samuels Logan to sit in place of Cody Kennedy and Randall Wrights, respectively.
Councilmember Stout moved to accept the city clerk’s report of the 2025 municipal election results; Councilmember Bialfuss seconded. The council approved the motion by voice vote, 5-0; the meeting record notes the council did not take a roll-call vote.
Sandoval also announced the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected and re-elected officials is scheduled for May 5 at 10 a.m.
No other substantive business was taken on the record during the special meeting.
