Council leaves Ward 1 seat vacant until November election

Brighton City Council on May 6 agreed to leave the Ward 1 council seat vacant until the November general election after discussing options including appointment and special election.
Councilmember Padilla said she polled residents and favored leaving the seat vacant, noting a special election would be impractical given the short time before the regular ballot and that appointing a member now could confer incumbency prior to the fall election. Councilmember Green proposed a motion to leave the seat vacant until the November election and Councilmember Fiddler seconded. The council voted 8–0 in favor of leaving the seat vacant for the remainder of the term until the election determines a successor.
Council discussed that Ward representation will continue across the dais — councilmembers said they will continue to represent and consider Ward 1 interests until an elected representative takes office. Staff noted the vacant seat follows the recent resignation of the prior Ward 1 councilmember, who relocated out of state.
No appointment process or special election will be initiated; the council’s decision will be recorded in the minutes and the seat will be filled via the regular electoral process in November.
