Council approves creation of Sustainability Advisory Board in first reading

Brighton City Council on May 6 approved on first reading an ordinance to create a Sustainability Advisory Board to advise staff on sustainability programs and community engagement.
Tracy McLean, sustainability coordinator, summarized recent sustainability accomplishments, including a 2024 sustainability plan adoption, a communitywide survey and LED streetlight conversions with United Power. McLean said 2025 work will include a community energy action plan with Xcel Energy, participation in the 2025 LEHI for Cities cohort (targeting a Silver LEHI designation), ongoing events and the proposed advisory board.
Under the ordinance presented, the board would have seven voting members (two youth members), one non‑voting council member liaison, three‑year terms with a four‑consecutive‑term limit, and monthly meetings. Members must live, work or attend school in Brighton or have significant ties to the city. McLean said the board would study, review and make recommendations on sustainability programs and help expand community engagement.
Mayor Pro Tem Padilla moved the ordinance forward; Councilmember Fiddler seconded. The council approved the first reading 8–0. Staff recommended final adoption and will return the ordinance for second reading and formal adoption at a future meeting. The council made no changes to the board size or term structure during first reading; Padilla expressed support for the board as evidence of the city’s commitment to sustainability.
