Board members discussed conditions at county refuse sites and possible maintenance and equipment upgrades during the April 23 meeting. The board and staff reviewed site grading, drainage, potholes and user access at locations including Chico and Hyde Park, and discussed how to document recurring problems.
Public works staff reported scheduled equipment upgrades: hydraulic lids (automatic hydraulic covers) will be installed at the Chico transfer site in the next one to two months. Staff also said electric/bear fencing will be installed at Topliner, Chico, Deep Creek and Clyde Park to deter wildlife from accessing refuse. Public works described electric pads at entrances that allow vehicles to drive over them safely but are intended to deter animals and raccoons from entering the site.
Board members discussed site cameras, broken gates and signage. Members asked that drivers and operators document site conditions on a simple checklist so the board could compile metrics and prioritize maintenance where it would be most effective. Staff said the county has limited crew time to perform grading and other repairs; some work can be done when county road crews are available or when operations staff have dedicated time.
The board asked staff to add a discussion item to the next meeting to review a proposed driver check form and to prioritize sites for improvements that may require budget consideration.
