Park County officials weigh emergency declaration as crews battle deep snow and drifting

The question of a formal emergency declaration is under review. "I did briefly talk with Erica yesterday and then sent it on to Paul in the attorney's office looking at potential of declaring a state of emergency," the Public Works Director said, noting that an emergency declaration would allow the county to access an additional $80,000 to hire contractors.
Why it matters: A declaration would free targeted funds to pay outside contractors for road clearance and other response tasks, officials said. The Public Works Director said even with outside help, crews might not be able to keep all roads open during the weekend wind event.
County staff described current operational impacts and mitigation steps. Public Works is prioritizing main roads and is coordinating with local fire departments for vehicle-recovery assistance; a county staff member said local fire resources have helped pull vehicles from ditches and clear driveways. Solid waste operations continue but are operating at reduced volumes because of weather.
Facilities issues were raised separately: building staff have deployed portable heaters while awaiting replacement HVAC parts. "Kelly's got heaters up," the Public Works Director said, adding that parts were expected in roughly seven weeks.
Officials said next steps depend on legal guidance from the county attorney's office and continued conditions in coming days. If a declaration is recommended, staff will present options to the commission for formal action.
