Park County departmental updates: paving, slide repair timeline, DUI task force restart and planning activity

Public works reported plans to begin paving the transit parking lot next week as weather allows, to complete grading and to pave East River Road once a contractor is scheduled through Montana Department of Transportation (MDT). The department said it will remove a beaver dam at Six Mile and that MDT approved a no‑passing zone for U.S. 89 north at mile marker 41, which MDT will sign this summer.
Public works also reported a recent fire inspection that identified multiple safety items — such as limits on power‑strip use and plugging/unplugging microwaves and refrigerators — and said offices will work to bring courthouse facilities into compliance.
Travis from the Park County Health Department said he is coordinating task orders related to DPHHS grants and is working to restart the DUI task force; he said the state would like the county’s fiscal‑year‑26 DUI task force plan signed by the commission by June 1.
Planning staff said the Planning Board will meet next Thursday to review a major subdivision; the commission will review that subdivision on May 27 at 10:00 a.m. Staff also described ongoing work on subdivision regulations funded by a Department of Commerce technical assistance grant and noted possible future map or zoning amendments for Paradise Valley and citizen‑initiated district work in Seuss Creek.
Compliance staff reported closing a zoning violation and working with landowners to resolve a costly septic violation that dated to November 2024. Museums staff said construction has started to repair basement flood damage and will require rehousing collections and repainting once the work is complete.
Fairgrounds and parks staff said HVAC ductwork installation and new windows are underway in the Exhibit Building, that an updated utility map is complete, and that staff continue work to prepare reservations and campground functionality for events.
MSU Extension reported Cooke City’s collection system is scheduled to break ground in June and noted a May 22 state meeting for sewer planning in Cooke City.
