Board approves child‑abuse and truancy policy revisions, deletes redundant procedures; minutes approved

The MSAD 51 Board of Directors unanimously approved a package of policy updates and administrative actions at its Jan. 16 meeting.
The board approved updated policy JLF (child abuse and neglect) and JHB (truancy), and approved the deletion of older, now‑redundant documents JLFA (child abuse prevention and response) and JLFAR (reporting child abuse and neglect procedures). Board members said the changes align policy language to state law and consolidate training and student‑education language into the single updated JLF document. The administration said legal counsel Drummond Woodson reviewed the revisions.
A motion to approve the minutes of the Dec. 19 meeting also passed unanimously. The board then voted unanimously to enter executive session to discuss negotiations with the MSAD 51 Education Association under MRSA 4056(d).
Board discussion included questions about data systems (PowerSchool) and whether truancy reporting is captured and backed up; the administration said required state‑reported attendance is entered into PowerSchool and that hard files also exist for students. Board members asked why the child‑abuse designation for truancy applies differently by age; legal counsel was cited for the statutory parameters.
