High school arts leaders highlight competitions, awards and San Francisco trip

Tina Hobson, the high school dance coach, and Kylie Younggren, choir director and visual and performing arts (VAPA) facilitator, addressed the board to report student achievements and upcoming trips.
Hobson introduced the small competition dance team — three seniors who served as captains — and said the team placed fifth at state in their dance category after competing against larger schools. “Between the second place score and where we were at fifth was less than 10 points,” she said, describing tight judging scores across regional events in which the team placed among larger 2A–4A schools.
Kylie Younggren outlined VAPA programs across TK–12 and noted participation numbers are substantial. She described recent recognitions: a high school student received regional awards and a $2,000 scholarship for artwork entered in the Wenatchee regional show; the band and choir programs are expanding and have high sign‑up for next year. Younggren also said district fundraising last summer raised about $70,000 to buy a new sound system for the high school performing arts center.
Younggren confirmed that a choir trip to San Francisco next year was approved through the consent agenda; the choir will work with Educational Discovery Tours, attend a musical, perform for a college choir director and do sightseeing and performance activities at a theme park. Board members were invited to attend upcoming events, including a student fundraiser called Sing on May 8–9 and Apple Blossom parade performances.
Ending: The arts presenters asked the board to continue supporting program growth and noted that recent competitive success, equipment donations and rising student participation fuel plans for next year’s performances and trips.
