County approves additional GIS technician position to allow cross-training ahead of retirement

The Muskegon County Ways and Means Committee on May 13 approved adding one GIS technician position, pay grade 12, effective May 21, 2025, and eliminating the current GIS technician position (G38601) effective upon the incumbent's retirement.
Chair Nash moved the motion (WM250534), which was supported by Commissioner Hayskamp and approved by voice vote. Committee members said creating the new position in advance of a retirement is common practice to allow cross-training.
Justin George of the Muskegon County Equalization Department, identified as the commercial and industrial manager, said the GIS technician performs mapping within the department, handles splits and combinations of parcels as they are adjusted year to year, and supports other internal geoprocessing functions. "But primarily GIS technician, is is what we refer to as our map or in our department as far as making sure that the all those things are available," George said.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the role and referenced the department's need to maintain mapping and parcel adjustment continuity. The motion was approved by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
