Boyle County approves $10,000 toward Lady Davis pool repairs as parks leaders outline capital projects

The Boyle County Fiscal Court on May 13 heard an extended Parks & Recreation presentation on capital needs at Millennium Park and approved a $10,000 county contribution to immediate pool repairs at the Bunny (Lady) Davis pool.
Tommy Gordon, director of Boyle County Parks & Recreation, gave a multi-part presentation covering recent maintenance work, a new digital database for memorial trees, athletic-field upgrades, and a prioritized list of joint city-county capital projects that includes a skate-park overhaul, mountain-bike trails, ballfield renovations and a performance pavilion that has a grant award but may not see funds for two years.
Gordon said the department has made several lower-cost improvements over the past year and presented a list of candidate projects for the city-county capital budget. "The ball field project was such a success that the city's hoping to do a few more fields this year," Gordon said, and he urged the court to schedule a joint meeting with city council to finalise priorities and funding. The court agreed to meet with city officials Monday at 8:30 a.m.
Pool repairs and funding: Gordon told the court the Bunny Davis pool has been losing water at a dramatic rate while pumps run: "we are losing 4 to 6 inches a day in the pool," he said. The county engaged a specialist, American Leak Detection; crews found three major leaks and then identified four smaller leaks. The firm performed an internal PVC welding procedure to try to seal the smaller leaks and tested the pool; county staff were filling the pool and planned to turn pumps back on to verify the repairs. Because the pool serves day campers and community swim programs, Magistrate Bodnar moved and Magistrate Gay seconded a motion to pay $10,000 toward the repair work; the court approved the payment by voice vote.
Other park notes: Gordon described efforts to reduce trash hauling burdens by replacing 55-gallon blue barrels with nearly 50 smaller trash receptacles and to improve athletic-field turf and warning tracks. Yvette Blythe, the parks maintenance director, demonstrated a new digital memorial-tree database that will track donor information, species and maintenance needs; Blythe said her "goal is to, at some point in time, be able to kinda release it to the public" so donors can locate and see photos of their trees.
The county and the city are negotiating priorities and funding; Gordon said several projects are jointly funded candidates and encouraged quick coordination so work can be scheduled in the fall construction window. The parks presentation also noted frequent park use (youth sports, tournaments, festivals) and operational requests — including better enforcement of park closing times after reports of an individual camping on park grounds.
Action taken: Motion by Magistrate Bodnar, second by Magistrate Gay, to pay $10,000 toward Bunny Davis pool leak repairs was approved by voice vote.
