Committee approves QMS 2025–26 program of studies with minor course‑description and HIVE clarifications

The Mansfield School Committee approved the Quinn Middle School program of studies for the 2025–26 school year at its April 29 meeting.

Principal Matt McGuire and QMS staff presented the changes as primarily editorial and organizational: updated course titles and descriptions to be more student‑friendly, clarified the status of science and enrichment courses, and revised eligibility language for enrichment classes. Officials replaced a rigid rule that students needed an 80 in all subjects and no more than four unexcused absences to be eligible for enrichment with a more flexible standard: students must be “in good academic standing and have positive attendance habits.” McGuire said the change was intended to open enrichment opportunities that otherwise would exclude students with legitimate absences or non‑traditional academic records.

The program of studies also clarifies the mixed‑use period (HIVE) that houses interventions, ensembles and academic support, and adds minor edits to language in world‑language and ELA course descriptions. McGuire said the revisions were designed to be clearer and more student friendly, and he asked the committee to consider additional explanatory sample schedules to help incoming families navigate choices in the mixed‑use period.
