Officials praise Stop DWI school event and ATAG threat‑assessment team; committee to hear recap next month

Officials told the Allegany County Public Safety Committee on May 7 that a recent Stop DWI (student awareness) event drew a large student audience and that the county’s new ATAG threat‑assessment team is filling a gap in early intervention.
Scott Grant, the county probation director, said juvenile intake referrals are down seasonally but highlighted the recent Stop DWI event. He told the committee it reached roughly 564 students and praised the work of organizers, including legislator Jessica McKnight, Tim Hand from the sheriff’s department, and Scott Lanfear (MTS). Grant requested permission to place a recap on next month’s agenda so those organizers could present feedback and a short video montage produced by Genesee Valley students.
Sheriff Scott Ciccarello, who participated on an impact panel at the school, said the program was the largest he had seen and praised community collaboration. “If it saves one life, it’s worth everything that we do,” he said. He and other officials noted the program’s recruiting value for EMT and junior firefighter training and its role in broader traffic‑safety education.
The sheriff also described ATAG, a multi‑agency team designed to identify threats early and bring representatives from hospitals, clergy and other sectors together to coordinate prevention and services. He said ATAG aims to overcome barriers between resources and agencies and stressed early intervention as the team’s main benefit.
Committee members asked for a future presentation from the event organizers; the committee also discussed connecting the Stop DWI group to the county traffic safety board and to fair outreach efforts.
