The Allegany County Ways and Means Committee voted May 7 to approve a services agreement to use a $15,000 state grant with the Allegany County Veterans Organization to host Dwyer Veteran Program events on the organization's property in Alma.
A county official explained the property is wooded with a pond, pavilion and several buildings, and that the state grant must be used for veteran services so there is no local share required. The county attorney drafted the contract and the county administrator and county treasurer reviewed and approved it, the presenter said.
A legislator who identified himself as both a county legislator and county commander of the American Legion said he had not been told about the agreement in advance and criticized the level of communication. In response, a county presenter said, "We will try to do better in the future." The committee moved and seconded the contract and the motion carried.
