The Allegany County Ways and Means Committee on May 7 approved accepting a $25,000 grant from SWIMS to cover lifeguard costs at the county beach.
County staff said the grant will be administered under a maintenance-of-effort (MOE) approach that allows the county to spend the grant funds first and then draw on county resources; staff said the award is structured to supplant county funds rather than necessarily increase wages. Tim (county staff) presented the request and described how the funds will be used for lifeguard staffing and related costs.
A committee member asked whether county funding for the youth program had been cut; staff said the county’s youth program had lost about $10,000 in state funding and that the SWIMS grant will help offset that reduction. The committee moved and seconded the item and the motion carried.
