District reports progress filling vacancies; 13 certified positions remain unfilled for 2025–26
Summary
Administration told the board on May 3 that, after accounting for special assignments and long‑term subs, 13 certified vacancies remained for the 2025–26 school year, down from roughly 30 a month earlier; the district reported recruitment efforts, student‑teacher compensation arrangements and a UNLV pathway program coming in January.

At the May 3 meeting the Humboldt County School District reported progress on recruiting certified staff for 2025–26 but said vacancies remain concentrated at several sites.
Administrators explained that the vacancy count on the board’s report lists 22 total openings but, after excluding special assignments, critical‑needs short‑term placements and long‑term substitutes, the district considers 13 vacancies still open. The district said that was an improvement from roughly 30 vacancies reported about a month earlier.
The presentation included a “domino effect” table that tracks transfers and fills across the district and a separate list of long‑term substitutes and special assignments that the district counts differently from permanent vacancies under the negotiated agreement.
Administrators said McDermott has vacancies in science, special education and English and that those openings have been hard to fill. They also reported 11 newly hired, fully certified teachers slated to join the district and four long‑term substitutes expected to return next year.
Superintendent‑level staff described an agreement that allows long‑term substitutes who must student‑teach to be paid during their student‑teaching term so they can remain in classrooms while completing licensure requirements. Administrators said that pathway and an upcoming UNLV recruitment/enrollment option that begins in January should help retain and convert in‑district staff to full certification.
Board members asked about outreach to high school students and potential pathways; administrators said they would provide further information and consider a future presentation on the UNLV pathway and recruiting plan.
No formal action was taken; the item was an informational update.
